Where to Start Rusty Lake: The Complete Cube Escape Play Order for 2026

If you are new to Rusty Lake and Cube Escape, the safest starting point is Cube Escape: Seasons. Continue in Rusty Lake's official recommended order rather than rearranging everything by story year. The series keeps circling through memories, different viewpoints, and events separated by decades; build a timeline too early and you may solve the mystery before you have even met everyone involved.

As of July 27, 2026, Rusty Lake's official FAQ lists 18 released games and one official short film. Cube Escape Collection bundles nine older chapters, so it is not counted as a new story entry. For a first playthrough, the route below is all you need.

The official Rusty Lake play order for 2026

  1. Cube Escape: Seasons

  2. Cube Escape: The Lake

  3. Cube Escape: Arles

  4. Cube Escape: Harvey's Box

  5. Cube Escape: Case 23

  6. Cube Escape: The Mill

  7. Rusty Lake Hotel

  8. Cube Escape: Birthday

  9. Cube Escape: Theatre

  10. Rusty Lake: Roots

  11. Cube Escape: The Cave

  12. Rusty Lake Paradise

  13. Cube Escape: Paradox

  14. Paradox - A Rusty Lake Film

  15. The White Door

  16. Samsara Room

  17. The Past Within

  18. Underground Blossom

  19. The Mr. Rabbit Magic Show

This is the order in which the series reveals its information, not a strict chronology of every event. The Paradox short film follows the game. The Past Within requires two players, one handling the past and the other the future. The Mr. Rabbit Magic Show comes last, like an anniversary invitation delivered long after your first visit to the lake.

Do not play Cube Escape Collection straight through

The Collection contains all nine Cube Escape games released before Paradox. Its menu looks like a neat row of chapters, but three standalone Rusty Lake games belong between them. You can still solve every room by playing the Collection from top to bottom; the characters and symbols will simply feel like pages torn from an old photo album.

Use this route instead:

  1. In the Collection, play Seasons through The Mill.

  2. Pause the Collection and finish Rusty Lake Hotel.

  3. Return to the Collection for Birthday and Theatre.

  4. Pause again and finish Rusty Lake: Roots.

  5. Return for The Cave.

  6. Leave the Collection for Rusty Lake Paradise and the standalone Cube Escape: Paradox.

  7. Watch the Paradox short film, then continue down the official list.

The benefit is that relationships and callbacks arrive in their intended order. The cost is only a few trips between menus, which is still easier than trying to remember why an animal guest or a machine suddenly seems important.

Where do the seven online games on this site fit?

This site currently has seven English Flash versions. They cover The Lake through The Mill, followed by Birthday and Theatre. All seven can be opened on desktop or mobile, but they are not the complete series.

The one warning worth remembering is simple: Seasons, the official first game, is not currently available here. If you want the full story, finish Seasons on an official platform first, then continue with The Lake, the first playable recommendation on this site.

The Lake: continue at the cabin after Seasons

The Lake compresses everything into a small lakeside cabin. Fishing gear, cupboards, and objects that seem unrelated are crowded into one room. It begins like a quiet search through drawers, until the lake and the room stop feeling quiet at all. It follows Seasons and is the best first entry available here. Rusty Lake's official game page confirms the island cabin and fishing setup.

Arles: a strange bedroom beside the main mystery

Arles moves into Van Gogh's bedroom, where the paintings, colors, and room itself become part of the puzzle. Its link to Laura and Dale's central story is looser, so treat it as a short official detour: it is still a locked room, only this time the clues have paint on their hands. Rusty Lake's official page identifies it as the third Cube Escape episode.

Cube Escape: Arles

Game

Cube Escape: Arles

A surreal point-and-click adventure set in Vincent van Gogh's bedroom in Arles, where players solve artistic puzzles to uncover the secrets of the room.

Harvey's Box: less space, just as many clues

Harvey's Box places the viewpoint inside a cardboard box being transported to Rusty Lake. The room becomes smaller, but the number of things demanding attention does not. Music, patterns, and objects sit almost on top of one another, and the answer often spends a long time staring back from the wall. Rusty Lake's official description places the story in 1969 and calls it the fourth episode.

Cube Escape: Harveys Box

Game

Cube Escape: Harveys Box

Cube Escape: Harvey's Box is a surreal point-and-click adventure and the fourth entry in the Cube Escape series, where a parrot named Harvey is trapped inside a cardboard box being transported to Rusty Lake.

Case 23: the escape rooms become a case

Case 23 follows detective Dale Vandermeer as he investigates a woman's mysterious death. Earlier games hand you fragments without labels; here, someone finally starts putting them into evidence bags. The bag barely closes before another door toward Rusty Lake opens. Rusty Lake's official introduction centers the chapter on the investigation and the search for the lake.

The Mill: keep it after Case 23

The Mill follows Case 23 from another side, moving to the mill where Mr. Crow lives and focusing on its mysterious machinery. Play the case first and the people and devices have context. Reverse the two, and the puzzles may still work, but the connections grind like a machine missing one tooth. Rusty Lake's official page lists it as the sixth Cube Escape episode.

Cube Escape: The Mill

Cube Escape: The Mill is a surreal point-and-click adventure and the sixth entry in the Cube Escape series, where players take on the role of Mr. Crow to process memories in a mysterious mill.

Birthday: finish Hotel before returning to 1939

After The Mill, the official route moves to Rusty Lake Hotel before Birthday. Hotel is not available on this site, so do not treat the next card as an uninterrupted chapter.

Birthday returns to Dale's ninth birthday. The cake, music, and presents first look like an ordinary family photograph, except it becomes harder to keep looking at that photograph. Playing Hotel first makes its animal figures and recurring symbols easier to recognize.

Cube Escape: Birthday

Cube Escape: Birthday

A surreal point-and-click puzzle game where players revisit the 1939 birthday of Dale Vandermeer to change a tragic past through memory manipulation.

Theatre: let six performances close this part of the route

Theatre follows Birthday. Six stage performances bring familiar characters, memories, and symbols back under the lights in altered forms. It is the moment when you know something behind the curtain is wrong and still reach for the rope. Theatre is the right final stop among these seven games; next, finish Rusty Lake: Roots before entering The Cave.

A shorter route if you only want to sample Rusty Lake

If you only want to find out whether the clicking, cold atmosphere, and cross-game clues are for you, use this relative order:

  1. The Lake

  2. Arles

  3. Harvey's Box

  4. Case 23

  5. The Mill

  6. Pause for Rusty Lake Hotel

  7. Birthday

  8. Theatre

This preserves the correct order of the seven playable games, but it is not a complete story route. If you decide to continue, put Seasons back at the beginning and follow the official list from there. All seven online versions are in English. Numbers, patterns, and environmental clues remain easy to inspect, but it helps to write down notes and codes—the series enjoys closing one door, then asking where you left the scrap of paper that opens the next one.

Where does Servant of the Lake fit?

Rusty Lake has announced that Servant of the Lake will release on August 13, 2026. The official release announcement describes it as a new premium point-and-click adventure.

At the time of this guide, however, the official FAQ has not added it to the recommended order. Do not place it before or after Roots based only on trailer-era clues. New players can continue with the 19-item list above until Rusty Lake publishes an official position.

Two rules are enough to remember

For the complete route, begin with Cube Escape: Seasons, follow the official order, and pause the Collection after The Mill, Theatre, and The Cave to play the standalone chapters.

To sample the atmosphere, begin with The Lake on this site and follow the seven-game route, while leaving room for Seasons at the start and the missing premium chapters in between. Long after a particular solution fades, a crow, a sugar cube, or that room you never quite escaped may still bring the lake back.
