Overview

SNK released Metal Slug 2 for Neo Geo arcade hardware in 1998. Marco and Tarma return alongside newcomers Eri Kasamoto and Fio Germi, while General Morden's new coup leads into a larger threat during the six-mission campaign.

The sequel keeps the joystick-and-three-button foundation while adding new ways to change the player's options. Mummy and fat transformations alter movement and attacks until cured, and vehicles such as the Camel Slug, Slugnoid, and Slug Flyer create encounters that do not play like the original SV-001 sections.

POW rescues, limited special-weapon ammunition, grenades, close-range attacks, and mission-end rescue bonuses still define the scoring loop. Metal Slug 2 is the original 1998 sequel; Metal Slug X is a separate 1999 reworking that changes enemy placement, timing, bosses, and weapon availability.

Controls

Arcade joystick
Move, crouch, and aim upward; vehicle movement depends on the current Slug
A button
Fire the handgun or current weapon; use a vehicle's primary gun
B button
Jump on foot or leave a vehicle
C button
Throw a grenade on foot or use a vehicle's limited heavy attack

Before you play

  • A transformation changes more than appearance. When movement or firing behavior changes, stop pushing forward and learn the new attack rhythm before entering the next crowded section.
  • Do not spend every grenade on infantry. Metal Slug 2 places armored targets and large bosses behind dense waves, so keeping a reserve gives you a fast answer when special-weapon ammunition runs dry.
  • Vehicle sections reward preservation, but not at any cost. Use the Slug's armor to absorb a mistake, then exit or launch a Metal Slug Attack if an unavoidable hit would destroy it anyway.
  • Rescue POWs after clearing the nearest threat whenever possible. A weapon pickup is most valuable when there is enough space to identify it and avoid losing it immediately.

Known limitations

  • This is Metal Slug 2's 1998 Arcade release, not the later Metal Slug X reworking; enemy layouts, weapon placement, and pacing therefore follow the original sequel.
