Overview

Emerald revisits Ruby and Sapphire’s Hoenn region with revised Gyms and a story involving both Team Magma and Team Aqua, with Rayquaza playing a central role. Developed by GAME FREAK and published by Nintendo, the original game launched in Japan on September 16, 2004.

Wild encounters and Trainer battles use turn-based combat. Choose a move, use an item or switch Pokémon to suit the matchup. To catch a wild Pokémon, weaken it before throwing a Poké Ball; switch to a better-suited teammate when a battle puts you at a type disadvantage.

Earn eight Gym Badges before challenging the Pokémon League. Hidden Moves such as Surf also help you explore, so your team needs to handle obstacles as well as battles.

After the main story, the Battle Frontier offers seven facilities with different rules. Check each facility’s entry restrictions before choosing your Pokémon and moves.

Controls

D-pad
On the original GBA, move your character and select menu options.
A / B
On the original GBA, A confirms or starts a conversation; B cancels or goes back.
Start
On the original GBA, open the menu while exploring.
Keyboard

Before you play

  • Keep a mix of Pokémon types and moves. Before a Gym battle, check who can handle the leader’s type instead of relying only on your highest-level Pokémon.
  • Lower a wild Pokémon’s HP before trying to catch it. Sleep or paralysis can help, but avoid knocking it out with an attack that is too strong.
  • Stock up on healing items before a long trip and bring the Hidden Moves needed to reach your destination.
  • Read each Battle Frontier facility’s rules before adjusting your team and moves.

Known limitations

  • The game text is in Chinese.
